The Nigerian Immigration, Nigeria's version of the USA's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decided to recruit new officers. The available posts were assumed to be around 5,000 nationwide but over a million people applied and showed up for the recruitment tests across 37 locations in the country. Despite collecting a thousand Naira each ($8) from every applicant, the department wasn't ready for such a huge turn up and without adequate crowd control measures in place, things were bound to go wrong...

Several young ones lost their lives in this unnecessary exercise. Every applicant paid a certain amount before they got invited for this tests yet those at the elm of affairs failed to note the number. Also, due to wide spread corruption, it was rumored that more than half of the purported 5,000 available positions have been allotted to those willing to buy them for several thousands of dollars. Many see the job as an investment and a guarantee of a steady pension. This isn't actually the motivation for many. The NIS is known to be a very corrupt organisation and many of these applicants are looking to be a part of that.
